Apex City of London Extension

ProjectConversion of existing office to 4 star hotel
ClientApex Hotels Ltd
LocationHart Street, City of London
CostApprox £6.0m
CompletionOctober 2008

Conversion of existing 1950s office building into 49 bedroom extension to existing operating 4 star hotel. Including demolitions, services extension and enhanced interior design, fit out & furniture design. All whilst existing hotel and office properties remained fully operational.

Due to the immediate success of the Apex City of London Hotel, Apex Hotels purchased the adjacent office property.

Detailed services alteration works were undertaken to split the property into two discreet wings, with the Mark Lane wing occupied as office space throughout. The new hotel wing was conceived as a luxury wing, with a softer, more intimate aesthetic, including a new guest library space and lounge.

ISA assisted with resolving complex Party Wall and Right of Light issues were resolved to allow construction work to be carried out adjacent to the listed public inn facade to one side and listed rectory and church buildings to the other.

ISA identified opportunities for economic extension to increase room numbers and improve the operation of the hotel. Construction methods were selected to suit the difficult landlocked site and a detailed noise impact assessment was carried out, with restrictions on working hours and practices considered within the design and procurement route.

Alteration works were carried out to the existing hotel, with improved public spaces created. These spaces strengthened the hotels relationship to the greenery of the neighbouring churchyard and ensured that the new extension dovetailed into the existing property, giving the perception of one, unified hotel.
