ClientPort of Leith Housing Association
LocationBingham Drive, Edinburgh
CostApprox £1.1m
CompletionJuly 2008

Residential care home for Leonard Cheshire Disability providing self contained apartments and respite rooms for users with severe mental and physical disabilities. Accommodation also included communal lounge and kitchen, laundry, staff facilities, office and staff apartment.

The flats and respite rooms are located on separate floors, each with staff facilities, allowing for future flexibility in the operation of the property. The building was orientated to maximise views to the adjacent park land, while creating an area of private garden to the rear.

It was essential that the building should be calm and simple, with as much access to daylight and fresh air as possible. Simple, geometric forms were used, with French doors opening up the apartments to the adjacent green spaces.

The building was conceived as outward looking and welcoming and was deliberately of a domestic scale. In this way it avoids the appearance of an institutional building, exceeding the expectations of the client for this ‘type’ of building, and playing a positive role in the community.
