Rethinking the Royal Mile
Ian Springford Architects were invited by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland to present a talk at their recent conference on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.
Our proposals included creating a new pedestrian link between the galleries on the Mound to the Museum of Scotland on Chamber Street- these proposals focused on creating the Grassmarket into a new social hub for the city by removing all parking, submerging the road beneath the ground and creating a public square with a performance area for Dance Base, tables and chairs for the bars and restaurants to use and a permanent venue for open air markets in the city. We suggested the Grassmarket could be linked to a re-landscaped Esplanade by external escalators to the north and by a pedestrian route from Chamber Street via Candlemaker Row to the south.
We also proposed creating a ‘zero emissions’ public transport system along the length of the Royal Mile, linking the Castle to the Parliment and banning the smoky tourist coaches that congest the street.
