Westgate House, Newcastle

The project is for a 140 bedroom, 4 star hotel in the heart of Newcastle city centre.
The existing building is a concrete framed office building over 12 floors. Reception and entrance will be located on the ground floor with a lounge bar on a mezzanine floor overlook the entrance. The hotels restaurant will be located on the first floor, overlooking the traffic below. Conference facilities are provided on the second floor, including a 200 capacity function suite and meeting rooms. Bedrooms are provided on the third to eleventh floors.
Westgate House is considered by the local community to be one of the ugliest buildings in Newcastle. As part of the development proposal, the building will be reclad with a simple but elegant new ‘suit of clothes’. The design of the new envelope respects the buildings modernist underpinnings and describes the function of the spaces behind the skin by modulation the proportion or materials of the new cladding.
