CostApprox £0.35m
CompletionJuly 2002

Conversion of existing office space into new bar & restaurant. Including demolitions, kitchen, interior design, fit out & furniture design.

Agua restaurant and bar was conceived as a mellow and relaxing retreat from the activity and speed of the Grassmarket.

The more intimate dining spaces are located to the rear of the existing long
linear space, although the relationship to the urban public realm is maintained and enhanced via new, full height shopfront windows. These new shopfronts give the bar a street presence and ensure an active relationship with the Grassmarket.

The ceiling over the private dining area to the rear is animated, both in form and with lighting, to create drama and contrast and give a perception of height. This is contrasted against dark timber flooring and heavy, textured wall cladding.

The bar itself acts as a pivot point in the space, and is highlighted by its Crema Marfil marble cladding and coloured glass back bar screens. Dark grey suede sofa and chair coverings by Kvadrat and internally gilded floor lamps add further richness and warmth.
